In week 10, the Vikings suffered a 31-13 loss to rival Easton High, ending the 2006 season with a 2-8 record - counting a forfeit victory over Colonel Richardson. Cambridge-SD moved the ball effectively against the Warriors, as junior Mark Holiday (22 carries, 93 yards) helped the home team total 156 yards on the ground. Senior quarterback Mike Wroten capped a 9-play, 66-yard game-opening drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge. However, the Warriors overcame the early deficit to take a 19-6 halftime lead en route to their fourth victory over Cambridge-SD in the last years.
CAMBRIDGE — Easton High’s football team got the victory it needed Friday night, not the prize.
Hours after the Warriors had punctuated their season with a 31-13 triumph over Cambridge-South Dorchester, it was learned they had fallen two points shy to Southern of Anne Arundel for the fourth and final seed in next week’s Class 2A East Region playoffs.
“It was hopeful thinking,” said Easton head coach Dennis Keenan, who learned about his team’s fate late Friday night. “You always want your seniors to play that one more game. That’s a shame.”
Moments after Easton (7-3) had secured its must-win over the Vikings, Keenan was informed his team had picked up valuable bonus points compliments of Colonel Richardson — a 48-35 winner over North Caroline — and Kent County, which registered its first victory on the field this season with a 12-2 win at Hancock (The Trojans’ other win came via forfeit.)
But Southern, which began Friday ranked sixth in the region, posted a 23-20 victory over Class 3A Annapolis (4-6) and picked up additional bonus points from Northeast and Meade to finish just ahead of Easton for the fourth spot. The No. 4 seed Bulldogs (6-4) will play at top-seeded Queen Anne’s (10-0) in one 2A East semifinal next Friday, while No. 2 seed Wicomico (10-0) hosts third seed and defending region champion Joppatowne (8-2) in the other semifinal.
Though the Warriors failed to earn a postseason spot for the 13th straight year, senior quarterback Scott Tull and senior wide receiver B.J. Thomas surpassed milestones against the Vikings. Tull completed 9 of 19 for 174 yards and three touchdowns, giving him 2,010 yards passing for the year, easily a new school single-season record. Thomas caught five passes for 56 yards, giving him 48 receptions for 1,049 yards, which is believed to be another Warriors single-season mark.
“I think it’s fantastic,” Keenan said of his senior combination’s achievements. “With everything this team has been through and for them to accomplish those goals within the team concept is a good thing for them and the school. You’re giving someone else something to aim for now.”
Easton’s primary focus, though, was securing its fourth victory in the last six years over Cambridge-SD (2-8), which has suffered a number of historic, lopsided defeats this season.
Shut out in their last two games, the Vikings grabbed a 6-0 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the first quarter, when Mike Wroten’s 1-yard touchdown run capped a nine-play, 66-yard game-opening drive.
“We saw a lot of things we could do against them,” Cambridge-SD head coach Jake Coleman said. “Our biggest problem is we really lack the guy that can take the ball 80 yards on one play. We lack that home run hitter.”
Thomas has been among Easton’s home run hitters all season, but he showed his big-play ability in a different fashion on the Warriors’ first snap from scrimmage. Running right with a pitch, Thomas pulled up and launched a perfect halfback option pass to Ryan Brice for a 48-yard touchdown that evened the game at 6-6 with 6:29 to go in the first quarter.
The game remained tied until Tyler Schmitt — on his first carry of the season — powered his way through the middle for an 8-yard touchdown run 3:24 before intermission. Ryan Geist added the extra point.
The Vikings fumbled on their next possession and Easton capitalized, as Bruce Blake outleaped D.J. Johnson and Hunter Aaron to haul in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Tull with six seconds left in the first half for a 19-6 advantage.
A 48-yard scoring strike from Tull to Daniel Spielman midway through the third quarter and a 24-yard touchdown toss to Thomas 15 seconds into the fourth quarter padded Easton’s lead to 31-6.
Cambridge-SD trimmed its deficit with under three minutes remaining, when Aaron picked up a fumble and raced 55 yards untouched for a touchdown. J.J. Shorter added the extra point.
Notes: Cambridge-SD’s Mark Holiday carried 22 times for a season-high 93 yards ... The Vikings, who had averaged 27.1 yards rushing their previous six games, totaled 156 yards on the ground against Easton, their highest output since they churned out 178 against Kent Island in Week 3 ... Tull finished the season completing 113 of 223 for 2,010 yards, 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Over the past two years, Tull has gone 184-for-367 for 3,029 yards, 38 touchdowns and 24 interceptions ... Thomas finished the year with 15 touchdown receptions. He has caught 73 passes for 1,413 yards and 19 touchdowns over the past two years.
